The Z 100-400 has a variable focal ratio starting at f4.5 on the wide end. It gets successively darker when you zoom in: f4.8 from 125mm, f5.0 from 185mm, f5,3 from 270mm, f5.6 from 380mm. This is a tad brighter than the F-Nikkor and also better than using the Z 70-200 with TC-2.0x which results in a constant f5.6 focal ratio.
That said, I’m glad Nikon went this route rather than introducing the 14-24mm f/2.8 first. The 14-30mm f/4 simply has a broader appeal than the upcoming f/2.8 zoom, which will be significantly heavier and more expensive by comparison. Summary Lens Specifications and Comparison to Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II There are a couple of differences worth noting here. While the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G has a maximum aperture of f/4, its minimum aperture is also smaller at f/32 (versus f/22 on the 70-200mm f/2.8G).
This is my comparison of the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 versus the Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4. Which of these zoom lenses is for you? I shot them both intensely on my
Additionally, you can get the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, Tokina 24-70 f/2.8 (superior to the Tamron version), and an Irix 11mm f/4 MF superwide for the price of the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8, money far
. The Nikkor 120-300mm F2.8 has all the trappings of a pro-grade lens: it's unapologetically heavy, offers weather sealing and sports an alphabet soup of special lens elements and coatings in its name. We spent some time capturing subjects on the ground, in the air and – kind of – at sea with this impressive optic. Take a look.
The Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S is again in first place around the 100mm mark, while the second sharpest of the bunch is the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S. Meanwhile, the Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is in third place with a solid performance that matches the 100-400mm in corner sharpness (at a given aperture) while being a bit worse in the center.
I see G2 as great travel and walk around package (together with 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8) with above average weather sealing and robustness quality that minimizes necessity to change and carry more lenses during traveling or sudden environmental condition change but still is able to provide high quality optical results.
The 5x zoom range of Nikon’s Z 24-120mm f4 S fits nicely between the 2.8x coverage of their 24-70mm zoom lenses and the 8.3x zoom of the Nikon Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR. On the long end the Z 24-120 has an angle of view of 20.5 degrees, compared to 34.4 degrees of a Z 24-70 or 12.4 degrees of the Z 24-200.
NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 @ 58mm, ISO 64, 1/20, f/4.0. As for build quality and handling, the 24-70mm f/2.8 is definitely more advanced. The main benefit is that you get more controls on the 24-70mm f/2.8, including a function button and an additional control ring. The 28-75mm f/28 is an extremely sparse lens by comparison.
